I'm Jeff, and Flying And Dining is my small company. This page explains what I collect when you use this site, why, and what you can do about it. I've tried to keep it plain.
What I collect
- If you create a Passport account: your first and last name, email address, and a password. I never see your password. It's stored scrambled (hashed) by my login provider.
- If you fill in your profile: your home airport, the airplane you fly, your pilot certificate, whether you own or rent, your flight school if you're training, and whether you want occasional emails from me. All optional.
- When you log a visit: the restaurant, the date, and anything you choose to add, like who you flew with, what you ordered, and notes.
- If you add a photo to a visit: the photo, stored privately. It's only used if you check the box saying it's OK, and then only on that restaurant's page, in Postflight, in the newsletter and on Flying And Dining's social media, credited the way you chose or not at all. I look at every one before it goes up. Delete the visit and the photo goes with it.
- If you share a review: what you write, shown with your first name and last initial once I've read and approved it. Before it reaches me, the text gets an automatic check by an AI service (Anthropic) for things like spam or personal information. Delete the visit and the review goes with it.
- If you use a pilot perk: which perk, when, and what you entered to qualify (a milestone and its date, your instructor's name, the airport you flew from, or your tail number).
- If you suggest a restaurant or report a problem: what you send, plus your email if you give it.
- If you use the contact form or leave a note on a restaurant fund page: what you type, plus your name and email if you give them. If you send a photo with it, I keep the photo in a private folder along with your permission and the credit you asked for. Location and camera details are removed from it first.
- Basic technical info: like any website, the servers that run this site keep short-lived logs (IP address, browser type, pages requested) for security and troubleshooting.
- If you use Tell a Friend: your name and email, and your friends' email addresses. I use a friend's address to send them one invite, and keep it so nobody can invite them twice. If they ask not to be invited, I keep the address only to make sure they never get another invite.
- Pilot certificate check: I compare your name, ZIP or home airport, and the certificate you list with the FAA's public airman database to confirm pilots and flight instructors and to prevent perk fraud. The result stays private to me. Restaurants and sponsors only ever see totals, like how many Passport holders are students or instructors.
- Visit counts: I use Plausible Analytics to see which pages get visited and roughly where visitors come from. It doesn't use cookies and doesn't collect anything that identifies you.
What I don't do
- I don't sell or rent your information. To anyone.
- I don't run ad trackers or share your data with advertisers.
- Your Passport stamps are private to your account. If you turn on sharing, restaurant pages you've logged show your first name, last initial and home airport. Your notes and dates always stay private. What you ordered can be counted on the restaurant page without your name, and only once a second pilot orders the same thing.
- When you use a perk, that restaurant sees your first name and last initial, the perk, the date, and what you entered to qualify. That's how they know Flying And Dining sent you. They never see your email or the rest of your Passport.
- When I talk to sponsors, I share totals only, like how many pilots are students or which states they fly in. Never names or email addresses.
Why I use it
- To run your account and keep your Passport.
- To send emails you need: confirming your address, resetting your password, and a note when you earn a new rating.
- If you opt in, the occasional email about a featured restaurant. Every one of those will have a way to stop them.
- To answer you when you write to me.
Who helps me run this
A few companies handle parts of the site for me. They only get what they need to do their job:
- Supabase stores accounts and Passport data on servers in the United States (Virginia).
- Railway hosts the website.
- Resend sends the site's emails.
- OpenStreetMap (or Mapbox) provides the map pictures on the Meal Map. Your browser loads those directly from them.
Cookies
When you sign in, the site sets a cookie so it remembers you. That's the only reason I use cookies. If you block them, signing in won't work, but the rest of the site will.
Your choices
- You can change your profile or turn off emails any time on your account page.
- You can delete any stamp you've logged.
- You can delete your whole account from the account page. That removes your profile and every stamp right away.
- If you want a copy of what I have about you, just ask.
Kids
Accounts are for people 13 and older. If you're a parent and think your younger child signed up, tell me and I'll remove the account. Young aviators are welcome to use a paper Passport with a grown-up.
Changes
If I change this page in a way that matters, I'll update the date at the top, and if it's a big change I'll email account holders.
Questions
Use the contact form and it comes straight to me.
