Who's behind this

Closing the pattern

I'm Jeff Broomall. I knew I wanted to fly by high school, but restaurants came first. I started at a fast food counter on my second day of high school, and over the next sixteen years I washed dishes, bussed tables and waited on people. I loved it. I love hospitality, meeting people and learning about them, and I loved being of service.

I kept waiting tables until the summer of 1998, when I started teaching flying part time. I've flown for a living since 1999. Restaurants stayed my backup plan the whole way, and I never stopped being curious about what makes a good one work.

A traffic pattern brings you back to the runway you left from. Flying And Dining is how I close mine, with the two things I've spent my life doing in one place.

Flying And Dining started years ago as an idea for a show: a small airplane, a different airport every trip, and whoever is cooking at the end of the taxiway. This site is where that idea finally gets to work.

The list covers restaurants on the field, within a mile's walk of the ramp, or a short drive away. I check every listing, and the FnD Passport lets you log your visits and earn ratings along the way.

It's also the home for what comes next, including the restaurants I hope to open someday.

From the AOPA Pilot archive

From 1993 to 1999 I worked at AOPA as an Aviation Technical Specialist and later an AOPA Online Specialist, helping members every day. I still believe general aviation is one of the great freedoms we have, and I'd like to keep serving the people who fly it.
